Golf can easily become an obsession (a.k.a. hobby) for anyone; male or
female, young or old. What other game challenges you each time you step
up to swing at that little dimpled ball? Weather conditions, green
conditions, club choice as well as the health of your body all influence
how you play that hole and all other games this season.
Naturopathic medicine provides natural and effective health care for all
golfers. By emphasizing whole-patient wellness and finding the
underlying ‘causes’ of any health concerns, a naturopathic doctor can
help you can take control of your health and help you achieve optimal
health. Golfing requires finesse, the right mental attitude and a
physically healthy body (as well as a set of golf clubs tailored to your
specific needs). With the following tips, you too, can improve and
maximize your golfing potential throughout this season.
Rules for Optimal Body Functioning
Proper Nutrition - You are what you eat. How often have we heard
this saying without truly listening to what it means? One of the major
tenets of naturopathic medicine is “food as your medicine.” In our fast
paced world filled with highly processed and refined foods, getting
optimal nutrition can be difficult. Remember that meals filled with
fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes are more effective
than ones filled with fast food and packaged foods. Include omega-3 rich
fish (i.e., salmon, halibut, mackerel) several times a week and moderate
amounts of soy and other lean protein in your nutritional repertoire.
Next time you head towards the drive-thru, think how it will affect your
body and your golf game.
To help ensure proper nutrition and health maintenance, include a
high-quality, high-potency multivitamin and mineral supplement in your
daily routine. This can be one of your best investments next to that
driver you’ve been yearning for. In order for your body to absorb and
utilize nutrients effectively and efficiently, it is best to take all
supplements in divided doses throughout the day. When it comes to
supplementation, like golf clubs, there are superior formulations and
there are ineffective formulations. Please read all labels carefully.
Recommended dose: Depending on the brand and quality of supplement you
choose. 1-2 capsules 3 times per day.
There are many different types of supplementation available today.
Whether you are seeking preventive medicine or have health concerns,
supplementation with vitamins and herbs can help treat and support your
body. With the possibility of drug-herb interactions and drug-vitamin
interactions, being under the care of a qualified naturopathic doctor or
other health care professional is important.

Water!
Dehydration is very common, especially here in Southern
Alberta where it has been deemed as arid as Arizona. Drinking alcohol,
coffee, tea, and sodas will also further dehydrate any individual. Joint
health, muscle integrity, and brain functioning are some of the systems
that are highly water dependent. Ensuring that you drink at least eight
to ten 8 oz glasses of clean, filtered water is one of the best
medicines you can give yourself.
Regular exercise (or movement)
We have all heard that
exercising regularly is good for our health. Movement programs such as
tai chi, yoga, swimming and even rebounding are all effective
exercises…as are running, step aerobics, and any other cardiovascular
activity. Always remember to stretch your muscles before and after
exercising to keep your body mobile, strong and supple.
Health is a reflection on how we choose to live. By following these tips
and keeping your body in optimal shape this season, you can ensure that
your golf game will be pain free (physically). |
